Learning in Community

“And do as adversaries do in law, strive mightily, but eat and drink as friends.”
William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

Today was our last day in the Baltimore area and it was a nice day to tie things up. We started out our day with the Baltimore Food Policy office. Not only were we able to learn more about the issues facing people trying to make a difference, we are understanding what those issues are and how we can help. The women we spoke to at the office were super knowledgeable and seemed to have a lot of care for the job.

After this we went to the Maryland Food Bank, where we worked in the freezer with other volunteers to sort food to be handed out to Maryland citizens. Through this experience we learned about how many meals are handed out to people in the area and how these meals impact the community. Through our labor, we were able to sort roughly 12 pallets of frozen food to go to families experiencing food insecurity.

After all of our learning and experiences throughout the day, our group got to go and explore Baltimore and connect more. Defne and I went on a boat ride after walking around the harbor, then met up with our group to explore and walk back together. Later that night, we had pizza and celebrated Zoe’s birthday with a cake and candles. Overall, this was an amazing day in Baltimore and I loved learning and connecting with this community.
